Expansion Conformers
Expansion conformers gently enlarge the eye socket in adults who need or wear a prosthetic eye, and in babies born with conditions affecting eye development. Our ocularists create customized conformers and monitor each child's progress toward a prosthetic eye.
Frequently asked questions
An expansion conformer is a custom clear shell used to gradually enlarge and shape an underdeveloped or contracted eye socket. In infants and children, it encourages balanced growth of the socket and the surrounding facial structures.
They’re used for babies and young children born without an eye or with a smaller-than-normal eye, and for adults whose socket needs to be expanded before or during prosthetic wear.
We fabricate a conformer sized for the current socket, then replace it with progressively larger conformers over time as the socket grows. Working closely with parents at every step, we monitor each child’s progress from an expansion conformer to a prosthetic eye.
